Like many of the churches in the area, St Dubricius is not located in a village. Within Hentland parish are a number of scattered hamlets and farmsteads. This dispersed settlement pattern is a characteristic of areas which were originally Welsh: parts of Herefordshire which have been English for longer have a pattern of nucleated villages.

In the past the church was important to these scattered communities in a way which is almost unimaginable now.

For centuries the inhabitants of these scattered farms and houses would have used St Dubricius as the focus of their communal activities - christenings, marriages funerals. Each Sunday, men, women and children would congregate from the corners of the parish to attend mass. Almost all on foot, but the gentry and the better off farmers riding.

Hoarwithy hentland Hoarwithy, on the River Wye, is the major settlement in Hentland parish.
