Herefordshire is in the West of England, in the Welsh Marches'. 'Marches' are borderlands. The title Margrave was originally given to the rulers whose role was to guard the 'marks' or marches of the Holy Roman empire. The German margrave was the Old French marchais, ultimately Marquess. Hentland was once Welsh, but the border is now ten kilometres to the west.
Hentland church is a couple of miles off the A49 between Ross-on-Wye and Hereford. There is only one road to it now. This is signposted off the A49 just north of the A4137 (Monmouth) junction.
