the late 13th century north aisle
The main part of St Dubricius church - the nave and the chancel - was built in the 13th century. A church has probably been on the site for much longer, but the 13th century saw the first stone building. Throughout the medieval period the transportation of building material was extremely expensive, and the stone is likely to have been quarried nearby. Extensive indentations just to the north of the church probably represent shallow quarrying. These have often been interpreted as traces of a deserted medieval village, but excavation and survey strongly indicated quarrying as the cause.
