Churchyard fence

Although many people assume that a churchyard wall is ancient, this document describes the enclosing of the east end of the churchyard in 1613. 'The east ende of Hentlande churchyard was inclosed with poste and railes upon the 31 daye of marche 1613 by Robert Smith of Trevadow the elder and John Hye church wardens there, Anno 1612, who were commanded ?? by Mr Doctor Bailie, the chauncellor, to inclose the premisses as aforesaid at and upon the charges of the same parishe - John Nurse Minister'

This document refers only to part of the churchyard perimeter. It is likely that the burial ground was once much larger
